Dental treatment

This grant provision is available to contribute towards the cost of clinically  necessary dental treatment other than routine treatment such as check-ups and hygiene appointments.

Whilst the NHS will provide any clinically necessary treatment needed to keep your mouth teeth and gums healthy and free of pain, it is accepted that private dental treatment is likely to include a cosmetic/aesthetic element.  Grants will not, however, be considered for dental treatment which is purely cosmetic and intended only to improve the appearance of your teeth.

Grant Policy

You must apply for this grant in advance of incurring any dental costs and before commencing any dental treatment.  Retrospective applications will NOT be considered by the Trustees.

Based on the cost of a proposed course of clinically necessary dental treatment the trustees will consider contributing as follows:

  • where the treatment does not exceed £1,000, a grant of up to 100% of the cost may be awarded.
  • where the treatment exceeds £1,000, a further contribution of 50% of the costs above £1,000 may be awarded with the proviso that there will be a cap of £10,000 on the overall contribution to an applicant's dental costs.

Guidance notes for applicants

Applications for grants will be considered by the Trustees where:

  • details of the treatment the dentist advises is clinically necessary and agreed with you are provided with the application form.  This should be in the form a detailed treatment plan and provided prior to any treatment being carried out.
  • a full and itemised cost of the proposed course of treatment is provided.
  • in cases of proven hardship, the Trustees may consider a grant to cover the full course of clinically necessary dental treatment.
  • if we need to speak to your dentist about your treatment an Access to Dental Records form will be sent to you.

Applicants should be aware that dental grants are awarded at the discretion of the trustees.

Process on receipt of a grant application

You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your application normally within one week of receipt.

Applications are sent to the trustees on a weekly basis and a response is usually provided within approximately two/three weeks although you should be aware that at times it may take longer.

Confirmation, in writing, of the outcome of your application, will be sent as soon as a decision is given by the Trustees.  If a grant is awarded, details of hor to access the grant will be included in the grant offer letter.
